Michael Weatherly will reprise his role in NCIS for season 24, following the cancellation of the Tony and Ziva spinoff. This confirms his return after speculation. The move impacts the show’s future direction.
Michael Weatherly is confirmed to return to NCIS for season 24, after the cancellation of the planned Tony and Ziva spinoff, marking a significant shift in the show’s upcoming storyline and character dynamics.
The actor, who portrayed Special Agent Tony DiNozzo, will rejoin the main cast of NCIS for its 24th season, as confirmed by CBS and multiple industry sources. This marks his first appearance since leaving the series after season 13.
The Tony and Ziva spinoff, which was announced in 2022 and featured Weatherly reprising his role, was officially canceled in early 2024 due to creative and logistical reasons, according to CBS officials.
Weatherly’s return is seen as a move to boost ratings and renew interest in the flagship series, which has faced declining viewership in recent seasons. The specific details of his role in season 24 are yet to be disclosed, but sources suggest he will play a significant part in upcoming storylines.
Impact of Weatherly’s Return on NCIS’s Future
Michael Weatherly’s return to NCIS is a notable development for the series, which has been a staple of CBS’s lineup for over two decades. His character, Tony DiNozzo, remains one of the most popular among fans, and his reappearance is expected to generate renewed interest and potentially boost ratings.
This move also signals a possible shift in the show’s narrative focus, integrating familiar characters to stabilize viewership and maintain audience engagement amid ongoing cast changes and competition from streaming platforms.

Background on Weatherly’s Role and Spinoff Cancellation
Michael Weatherly starred as Tony DiNozzo from the series premiere in 2003 until his departure in 2016. He became a fan favorite, known for his wit and chemistry with other characters. In 2022, CBS announced a Tony and Ziva spinoff, intended to explore the characters’ lives post-NCIS, with Weatherly reprising his role.
The spinoff was officially canceled in early 2024, with CBS citing creative differences and scheduling conflicts. The cancellation was viewed as a setback for fans hoping to see Weatherly and Cote de Pablo’s Ziva David reunite on screen, but it cleared the way for Weatherly’s return to NCIS itself.
This development follows years of speculation about Weatherly’s potential return, which has been fueled by social media hints and fan campaigns.
